Superman Returns in a BIG way!

After the success of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, and the failed return of Superman in the 2006 SUPERMAN RETURNS, moviegoers were left wondering if Warner Bros. could find a way to successfully resurrect Supes and pave the way for a potential JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.
Finally, seven years later, Zack Synder (300,WATCHMEN), Chistopher Nolan (producer on this film) and writer David S.Goyer(Blade,Batman Begins) successfully bring Superman back were he belongs-front and center on the big screen.
As usual, I don't go into plot details, but I will tell you that I was blown away by the depiction of Superman's home planet Krypton. It was like something out of a Star Wars movie, and that's a good thing. Russell Crowe is on hand as Jor-el and gives his best performance since GLADIATOR. He's also joined by an all-star  cast that includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane,Kevin Costner as Johnathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Lawrence Fishburn as Perry White. Great Cast.
The movie rests squarely on new comer Henry Cavill's broad shoulders as Superman/Ka-el/Clark Kent. It's safe to say that he is the 21st Century Superman. He fills out the costume in mind, body and spirit. He does Christopher Reeves proud. Cavil gets help in carrying the movie from the Villain, General Zod, played wonderfully by Michael Shannon. He is so evil that you keep wondering if Superman has whats it takes to defeat General Zod and his band of Krypton super soldiers, including a wicked Super Chick, played by Antje Traue. She, along with Cavill, give star making performances.
This Superman movie is heavy on action and drama and should satisfy any Super Hero fan out there. I was a bit bothered, however, by seeing Metropolis Skyscrapers being demolished over and over again in the awesome fight sequences in the last third of the movie. Seeing buildings collapse and people running for their lives brings back reminders of September 11, 2001. There were parts of that sequence in the film that I found hard to watch.
My overall reaction is that THE MAN OF STEEL is yet another HUGE achievement in the super hero genre. And thankfully, it's not anywhere as dark as THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. I'm tired of dark, brooding super heroes. It's beyond time that Superman returns, bringing back Truth,Justice and the American way, just like when I was a boy.
On a scale of 1-10, I give THE MAN OF STEEL a 9.
