REVIEW:X-Men:Apocalypse

There is a scene that can be found about half way through the 2:24 minutes that is X-Men:Apocalypse, where some of Charles Xavier's students go to see RETURN OF THE JEDI and debate on what was the best of the trilogy. One of the students says "The third movie always sucks".
That will probably be said for this third entry in the current X-Men trilogy.
I'll cut to the chase and tell you that my biggest problem with APOCALYPSE is the villain, Apocalypse. There is no real menace in him. No clear cut objective. He just stands around and talks every single time he's on scene. Every bad guy in every movie wants to rule the world. I'm pretty sure that's his objective here, but it is so muddled down in his trying to find every mutant on Earth. Why is not clearly defined. He finds four mutants to be his enforcers or his four horseman, but with the exception of Magneto, the other three characters introduced are hugely under-developed, along with the villain. Matter of fact, the longer this plot line continues without the main characters (the X-Men) it almost makes the movies momentum come to a complete halt.
Which leads me to what is good about this movie-the X-Men themselves. The film hits it's full stride and potential when it is focused on the mutants we've come to know and love over 7 or 8 films. I've lost count. And after that many films, they still remain fun to see on the Big Screen. We get re-introduced to Scott Summers (Cyclops), Jean Grey(Marvel Girl), Kurt Wagner (Night Crawler) and... I feel like I'm leaving someone else out. They are joined by the previous two films main characters, Professor X, Magneto,Mystique and Beast. All these characters combined and united on the Big Screen make this third entry worth seeing and entertaining, especially the third act with their showdown with Apocalypse and friends. There is one more reason this still works so well. Bryan Singer makes us care about these characters and the stories told here, especially Magnetos and Scott Summers, are worth the price of admission. Too bad the villain ends up being a dud. And I do not blame the actor portraying him-Oscar Issac (from The Force Awakens). He does a wonderful job with what he is given. It's not much to work with.
   So, on my A to F scale, I give X-Men:Apocalypse a solid B.
