The Imitation Game

THE IMITATION GAME, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley is the story of a brilliant mathematician who is hired by the British Government to crack an Enigma Code. The Enigma Code was a jumbled code used by the Germans in World War II to communicate vital information in their efforts to win the World War.
Talking about the plot of the movie beyond this gets very complicated for me because it involves heading into spoiler territory, something I do my very best to avoid when writing reviews. Instead, I will write about what I liked and disliked about THE IMITATION GAME without going into any spoilers.
Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant as Alan Turing, the real life mathematician who can be quite a handful to work with. At first, I thought Cumberbatch was playing another Sherlock Holmes type character (he plays Sherlock Holmes in the British TV Series Sherlock, for those who didn't know), a know-it-all with smart mouthed comments. But the further you get into the film, you find out that's not the case at all.
The screenplay, which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, written by Graham Moore, is a complicated piece of work, that does ask for a tiny bit of patience from the viewer.
The supporting cast lead by Keira Knightley and Mark Strong supply good support to Cumberbatch, keeping the film from turning into a "vehicle" for the lead actor.
And lastly, the musical score by Alexandre Desplat is amazing. One moment the music amplifies the mystery aspect of the film and the other depicts the hidden pain of Alan Turing.
The hidden pain I speak of gets me, once again, dangerously close to spoiler territory. It's here, that I learned a lesson in judging a person on his or her differences or short comings. It's a terrible thing when society castrates a person for being different. I'll end my review of THE IMITATION GAME with that.
But one last thing...this is a film that deserves to be talked about after it's viewing.
On a four start scale, I give THE IMITATION GAME ***1/2 stars.
