Lady Bird-A Highly Entertaining Coming of Age Film.
LADY BIRD is a thoroughly entertaining film about a 17-year-old girl named Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson(Saoirse Ronan) in Sacramento California in the years 2002-2003. It is also about her strong-willed Mother, Marion, played to perfection by "Roseanne" star Laurie Metcalf, in a sure-fire Oscar-caliber performance. Metcalf and Ronan are the best on-screen Mother/Daughter Duo since Shirley McClaine and Debra Winger took the silver screen in the Acadamy Award Winning TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. Don't worry. No one gets cancer and dies.
LADY BIRD is wonderfully written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Every single frame of this film flows with a unique view and voice. At times during the film, I actually thought I was seeing something new and original. A BIG tip of the hat to Miss Gerwig. LADY BIRD is sure to get several nominations and many accolades during Award season.
The film also features several more fine performances in the film that do require mentioning. Beanie Feldstein as Lady Bird's best friend, Julie. Lucas Hedges (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) as Lady Bird's boyfriend, Odeya Rush as Jenna, a popular girl at the Catholic School Lady Bird attends and Tracy Letts as Lady Bird's father. Almost all of these performances are from people whom the mainstream moviegoer may be unfamiliar with. Maybe not so much anymore.
LADY BIRD is a film about a girl metamorphosing into a young lady, much to her Mother's reluctance to let her baby fly from the nest on her own. Parents of teenagers or young adults will surely relate to the parents in the film and I also think everyone can relate to a character like LADY BIRD, whether you are female or male or something in between. A highly relatable tale of growing up in the 21st Century.
I give LADY BIRD an A-. Why not an A+? LADY BIRD is a little bit too avant-garde for my taste to give it a solid A+. If you haven't heard of this film, you will be hearing many things about it in the coming months. Mark my words.
